Club rules

Swimmers must be accompanied to all club nights and carnivals by a parent/guardian or a clearly identified adult who has responsibility for them. Swimmers without adult company will not be admitted to the pool area.

School and Health Regulations require all swimmers to wear bathing caps whilst in the pool. Most other pools in which we compete have a similar ruling.

To assist timekeepers to have a clear view of the race start and finish, only swimmers from the current or the following event are to be in time keeping area.

Swimmers must not walk in front of the timekeepers.

Swimmers names will be called TWICE only. It is their responsibility not to miss their event.

We must have complete silence on the referee’s whistle for the start of every race.

When the referee blows the first “ready” whistle, the swimmers will stand on or beside their blocks (or enter the water for Backstroke feet first). Non-competing swimmers will remain silent until the race starts.

If a false start occurs, there will be repeated shrill blasts on the Referee’s whistle. The swimmers will stop and resume their positions on the starting blocks.

During a race, if the swimmer needs to, they may use the lane ropes or the bottom of the pool for support/rest, but must stay in a stationary position. If any assistance is gained by pulling on the ropes or walking or pushing off the bottom of the pool, the swimmer will be disqualified.

The swimmer’s race is finished only when they touch the end of the pool: in the case of Breaststroke and Butterfly, both hands must be used simultaneously. In the case of Backstroke, swimmers must still be on their back when their hand touches the wall.

All swimmers are to stay in the water until the end of the event when the Referee’s whistle will signal the swimmers to leave the water by the side steps, not over the end of the pool beside the blocks.

Decisions by the Referee will be final and binding.

Any grievances with the Club operations should be referred in writing to a Club Meeting and definitely not dealt with by individual members.

No running near the pool.

The school grounds and buildings are out of bounds. No swimmer should leave the pool enclosure during any club event. Swimmers will use the toilets in the dressing sheds located in the pool enclosure. FACILITIES ARE TO BE KEPT IN A NEAT AND TIDY CONDITION AT ALL TIMES.

For safety reasons mobile phones are NOT permitted within the amenities areas of the pool.

Any swimmer who is suffering from an infectious or contagious disorder eg. eyes, ears, nose or sores on any part of their body, will not be allowed in the pool.

Intoxicating liquor or drugs are prohibited on school premises.

Carnivals

As stated earlier, ALL swimmers representing Ormiston College Swimming Club MUST be in full club uniform to compete at any carnival other than our own Club Championships. (See Swim Wear for further notice of this rule).

To compete in any Inter Club, Brisbane Swimming or Queensland Swimming carnivals the swimmer must be fully registered with our swimming club, have paid fees in full, and for all new swimmers, presented their birth certificate.

Our Carnival Coordinator will put up a notice on the notice board and website about any upcoming carnivals and will also make mention of these on club nights.

IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PARENT TO NOMINATE YOUR CHILD FOR A CARNIVAL, TO PROVIDE QUALIFYING TIMES, AND TO PAY ANY CARNIVAL FEES PRIOR TO THE CLOSING DATE. NO NOMINATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THE CLOSING DATE. Nomination forms are available on club nights and in the green shop. Please fill these forms in and put the correct money in an envelope and address it to Swimming Club Carnival Coordinator. If you do not know your child’s Personal Best Times for each stroke, please contact the Registrar who will be able to provide you with a copy of your child’s PBs as swum on club nights.

These rules are only a summary of the official rules and by-laws. Any questions should be referred to the Executive Committee in writing.
